SSPX: Excommunication Fallout
How are the Catholics who frequent the SSPX reacting to the excommunication decree issued by the DDF?
On 1st of July, 2026, as many would already know, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX, or FSSPX) carried out the scheduled consecrations of four bishops without a papal mandate at Écône in Switzerland in a solemn, public, and highly watched live Mass & ceremony that spanned several hours — interruptions of rain notwithstanding.
Aside from the announcement of a new Pope (Habemus Papam), few Catholic events in recent memory have attracted such widespread attention. The ceremony was a breath-taking witness to the solemnity, dignity, and transcendent beauty of the Traditional Latin Mass, drawing more than 16,000 faithful from across the world—families, children, veiled women, and many young people who gathered despite the weather. In its reverence and splendour, the liturgy at the ceremony easily put to shame the mundane casualness manifest in the synthetic & drab rite that is the 1969 Novus Ordo Mass, leaving me convinced that it more fittingly reflected the majesty and glory due to God.
A day later, on 2 July 2026, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, acting with full papal authority, declared the automatic excommunications of the bishops who carried out the unauthorized consecrations, including the four newly consecrated bishops of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX).
An important distinction that was material in the current excommunications as against the prior excommunications of 1988, was the inclusion of lay Catholics who "formally adhere" to the SSPX within the laughable scope of ‘excommunication’ and ‘schism’.
Of course, there is more to the excommunication of the SSPX and the faithful than just an attendance of the Latin Mass at their chapels, priories, etc. The actual motive for the excommunication of the laity has more to do with allegiance and fealty of the faithful to ‘the Council to rule all other Councils’ — ‘the Bulldozer Council from Hell’, as I plainly call it— Vatican II. And recall that this is the same council that defined no new doctrines binding on Catholics. In the pastoral aftermath of Vatican II and its all-encompassing "spirit," together with its long-promised and overdue "springtime," every religion on earth now appears to be acceptable—except, it would seem, the Catholic faith itself.
This is nothing short of Spiritual Terrorism, apart from an abuse of power by the Vatican.
But how have the faithful reacted to this Spiritual Terrorism and abuse by their ‘father’?
On X, several people have been reporting that it is business as usual at the SSPX chapels, priories and location where the faithful attend Mass. For example, this Priory in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is said to have had people waiting for the previous Mass to conclude so that they can attend the next one — implying a full house.
This post from the SSPX in Barcelona, Spain, suggests that the venue was filled to capacity, with standing room only.

The SSPX in North Idaho, America, also reported a similar turnout.
Popular commentators and SSPX loyalists such as Jeff Cassman, TLM Ryan, and The Catholic Esquire also noted an uptick in Mass attendance in SSPX masses.
As expected, the actions by the Society have buoyed the conservative middle-of-the-road ‘Trads’, who have sounded their hope for an end to Francis’ Traditionis Custodes and a return to more “permissions” & indults as had been the case by John Paul II in the aftermath of the 1988 consecrations, issuing the Ecclesia Dei Motu proprio & initiating a community with the same name; The good behaviour of the faux Trads since the election of Leo needs to be rewarded, after all. And Rome will be happy to maintain a ‘divide and rule’ policy by allowing selective & hybrid permissions (Latin Mass, but 1969 rite) to the indult communities in order to deter the faithful from the SSPX again.
Needless to say, more draconian steps towards the SSPX faithful can certainly be expected from Rome in the days to come.
Rome wants us to believe that families who desire the Traditional rite within the SSPX are now no longer Catholics, whereas the opposite is actually true. May the faithful who are loyal to the Society continue in good stead and may the Society continue in their noble endeavour of preserving the Tradition handed down to us until saner & more godly times prevail.

Our SSPX Chapel was just as well attended and seemed to have additional people in attendance on Sunday. Everyone I spoke with seemed good.
